Godzilla vs. Kong has finally been released after being postponed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. On March 31, 2021, it will be released in the United States. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

Adam Wingard directed the picture, which was produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers. Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script, which was adapted from a tale by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on King of Monsters as well. Godzilla vs. Kong takes place five years after King of the Monsters and features a massive confrontation between Godzilla and Kong in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.

Godzilla and Kong are the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla and Ghidorah battled and killed each other for dominion in 2019. On Skull Island, its climate has become unstable due to a storm generated by Ghidorah combining with the storm cell perpetually surrounding the island, forcing Monarch to contain Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him company.

When Jia comes to see Kong and offers him a toy, the Titan, knowing that he is stuck within the biodome, discovers this and quickly tosses a tree at it.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an Apex Cybernetics employee and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material implying dark operations at a Pensacola Apex facility, but Godzilla appears and suddenly strikes. Among the rubble of the facility, Bernie discovers a bizarre piece of equipment like a huge robotic eye.

Following the attack, the public, impressed by Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school. When she tries to reason with her widowed father Mark (who also happens to be the Monarch's director) regarding the origins of Godzilla's rampage, he dismisses all she says, only stating that animals may change like people. Madison enlists the help of her best friend Josh Valentine to solve the secrets surrounding Apex and the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.

Walter Simmons, Apex's founder and CEO, enlists the help of Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan's brother was murdered by a massive anti-gravity field in the tunnel while attempting to explore the Hollow Earth. Apex, according to Walter, has created ships called Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles (HEAVs) that can survive the gravitational pull of the Earth.

Nathan travels to Skull Island, where he meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews. Nathan proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to guide them to the Hollow Earth, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Ilene Andrews agrees, and the two of them set out to find the energy source. Though Ilene initially refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees after being persuaded by Nathan that they must undertake this mission in order to halt Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home on the mainland.

Nathan has no option except to stop all of the ships' power in order to deceive Godzilla into thinking he has destroyed them and Kong has been defeated. After seeing the shattered fleet, he swims away, delighted with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica entry point for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. Kong is told that his home is beyond the door, but Jia refuses to step through it.

In that location, the three disembark and find themselves inside a vast dark chamber, where they come across Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanized counterpart of Godzilla controlled by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's chief technology officer Ren Serizawa, who is also Walter's chief technology officer. As soon as Mechagodzilla is launched, Walter releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the chamber in order to put the mecha's might against the Titans to the ultimate test. Madison, Josh, and Bernie are on the verge of being attacked by the Skullcrawler when it is grabbed and restrained by Mechagodzilla, who uses a powerful red energy beam to cleave the Skullcrawler in half, allowing Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a small hatch. However, because to the restrictions of the power source, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down immediately after the conclusion of the exam.

Walter plans to use the energy of the Hollow Earth to overcome Mechagodzilla's restrictions, it is revealed later. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species. Madison and the others stumble upon a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been turned into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle against Ghidorah five years ago.

Kong and Nathan's team continue their journey to a majestic stone temple that belonged to Kong's ancestors. Kong finds an ancient axe carved from a deceased Godzilla's race member's dorsal plate as they make their way into the ruins of an old fight between Kong and Godzilla's race. Kong's axe may also be replenished by this source of power. Maia and the Apex team use spider-like drones to capture the power source and send it back to their Hong Kong headquarters, despite Ilene's concerns that Apex cannot merely seize the find of the century. When the guardians of Maia open fire on Nathan's team, Kong cries back with all his might. Godzilla races to Hong Kong as soon as he discovers the activation of Mechagodzilla.

It's a good thing Godzilla can't fly. In their HEAV, Maia and her crew try to depart but Kong grabs it on their way out and smashes it in his palm, killing Maia and her staff within.

Hearing Godzilla's scream as he gives him with another challenge, Kong accepts and begins to make his way to Hong Kong with his axe in hand through the hole caused by Godzilla's atomic breath, as Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow him in their HEAV. When Kong confronts Godzilla in Hong Kong, he battles him again, this time getting the upper hand and shoving his axe down Godzilla's throat to prevent him from launching his atomic breath. Kong realizes that his axe is capable of not only blocking Godzilla's atomic breath, but also absorbing it, and uses his weapon to harm the Titan in the thigh, however Godzilla immediately removes and discards the axe. After evading and dodging Godzilla's assaults with the help of Hong Kong's structures and greater agility, Kong recovers his axe and brings it down on Godzilla, causing an explosion that pushes both Titans back, convincing Nathan that Kong has won the second round.

Godzilla, despite having already become tired from his previous fight against Kong, and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both firing their energy beams at one other which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to get the upper hand and push Godzilla down and burn him. Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices that his heartbeat is slowing down. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and severely beat Godzilla, the others approach an unconscious Kong. In response, Ilene explains that they are unable to generate a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart. However, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, Nathan flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before meeting up with Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his adversary. Kong eventually agrees. However, after Kong has continued to watch Godzilla being defeated by Mechagodzilla for some time, Jia discloses to him the truth, revealing that it is the robot, not Godzilla, who is the "real" adversary. After a brief moment of denial, Kong ultimately accepts and sets aside his resentment before entering the fight to assist Godzilla in reattaching his severed limb.

Madison reunites with Mark and introduces him to Josh and Bernie, who are happy to see Mark and ask him onto his show to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla suddenly approaches Kong, forcing the Titan to take his axe and restart the battle. Godzilla doesn't attack, but stares Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, ending the conflict between his species and Godzilla's. Godzilla and Kong are now equals, and Godzilla returns to the sea quietly, with Kong and all the people watching.

On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the pandemic's continuing effect on the box office.

This is Terry Rossio's first Godzilla film since he wrote the script for the 1994 picture that was never filmed.

At 113 minutes, Godzilla vs. Kong is the MonsterVerse's shortest film.

A possible allusion to Martin Riggs' iconic talent of a similar kind in the Lethal Weapon series might be made in the moment when Kong slams his right shoulder against a structure to realign it after it had been dislocated previously.

The scene where Kong jumps from ship-to-ship is similar to a scene where Eva Unit-02 jumps from ship-to-ship trying to avoid an angel, much like Godzilla.
